The old tradition of bundling
|
It was only in the last 50 years that it
became acceptable for couples to live together before getting married. Years
ago the first night couples would spend together was their wedding night. But
New Englanders created a tradition to get around this. During the eighteenth
century in New England engaged couples were allowed to sleep in the same bed
one night designated by the bride's parents. A long plank was set between the
engaged couple. The plank was supposed to remain in place the entire night and
the couple was required to keep their clothes on, but this may not be what
actually happened. This wedding tradition is no longer practiced, but it is
interested that engaged couples found a way to sleep in the same bed together
before the wedding. By Nicole Mazzeo Wrapwithus wedding favors |
